Royal Caribbean Auckland Port Guide 2026/27: Anthem of the Seas, Fergusson Terminal & Things to Do
Last checked: 14 August 2026
Sailing into Auckland with Royal Caribbean?
There is one particularly important thing you need to know for the 2026/27 season:
Do not automatically assume your ship will dock at Queens Wharf.
Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas is currently scheduled to visit Auckland on:
Wednesday 23 December 2026
and Ports of Auckland currently assigns the ship to:
Fergusson Terminal.
The official port schedule currently shows Anthem of the Seas arriving for pilot boarding at 5:30am and departing at 7:00pm, following a call at Bay of Islands and before continuing to Tauranga.
Royal Caribbean's passenger itinerary describes the Auckland call as docked from 7:00am to 7:00pm on day five of its nine-night New Zealand holiday cruise from Sydney.
Those times aren't necessarily contradictory.
We'll explain why shortly.
More importantly:
Fergusson is not the same visitor experience as Queens Wharf or Princes Wharf.
Queens and Princes put passengers directly into downtown Auckland.
Fergusson is part of Auckland's working port.
So Royal Caribbean passengers on this call should pay close attention to their ship's final disembarkation and transfer instructions rather than relying on a generic Auckland cruise-terminal guide.
This page will help you understand:

Our goal is not to convince you that every Royal Caribbean passenger needs a ship excursion.
It's to make Auckland easy to understand.

The Royal Caribbean itinerary confirms that Anthem's holiday voyage leaves Sydney, spends two days at sea, tenders at Bay of Islands, docks in Auckland on 23 December, visits Tauranga on Christmas Eve and then returns to Sydney after three sea days.
Anthem of the Seas in Auckland — 23 December 2026
This deserves a dedicated section because it's a major Auckland cruise call.
Ports of Auckland currently lists:
ANTHEM OF THE SEAS
Arrival: Wednesday 23 December 2026 — 5:30am
Departure: Wednesday 23 December 2026 — 7:00pm
Wharf: FERGUSSON
Previous port: Bay of Islands — Paihia
Next port: Tauranga.
Royal Caribbean's guest-facing itinerary says:
Auckland
Docked 7:00am–7:00pm.
That gives passengers a substantial scheduled Auckland day.
But:
Do not book something for 5:45am.
Here's why.
Why Does Ports of Auckland Say 5:30am but Royal Caribbean Says 7:00am?
This is one of the best Auckland cruise questions to understand.
Ports of Auckland explains that the expected-arrival times on its schedule are generally based on the ship's pilot boarding time, with roughly 1½ hours required from the pilot station to berth.
So:
5:30am
Pilot boards.
Then approximately:
1½ hours
for the ship to reach its berth.
Which gets us to roughly:
7:00am.
Exactly the time Royal Caribbean gives passengers for its docked Auckland call.
So Royal Caribbean passengers actually have a very useful real-world example of the difference between:
port operations time
and:
passenger port time.
What Is Fergusson Terminal?
Fergusson is part of Auckland's working container port.
That makes it very different from Queens Wharf or Princes Wharf.
At Queens:
Passengers normally walk off the ship and are immediately beside downtown Auckland.
At Princes:
Same general idea.
At Fergusson:
Do not assume normal pedestrian cruise-terminal access.
This is an operational port environment.
Ports of Auckland currently assigns Anthem of the Seas to Fergusson on 23 December 2026.
As of our August 2026 check, detailed Royal Caribbean passenger shuttle arrangements for that December call are not yet something we would treat as confirmed public information.
So the correct advice today is:
Follow Royal Caribbean's final instructions.
Not:
“Just walk out of Fergusson.”
And not:
“There will definitely be shuttle X going to location Y.”
We'll update our dedicated Fergusson guide as the call approaches and passenger arrangements become clearer.
Is Fergusson in Downtown Auckland?
It is within Auckland's central port area, but it is not the same walk-off downtown arrangement as Queens Wharf.
This distinction matters more than the geographical distance.
The issue isn't simply:
“How far is it?”
It's:
“How are cruise passengers safely transferred through an active port?”
That is why passengers should follow Royal Caribbean's port-day information for the exact drop-off and return arrangements.
Once passengers are transferred into central Auckland:
The city itself becomes very easy.
Will Royal Caribbean Provide a Shuttle From Fergusson?
As of 14 August 2026, we would not publish a definitive shuttle arrangement for the December Anthem call until Royal Caribbean or the port confirms the operational plan.
That is deliberate.
Cruise-terminal information changes.
Transport plans change.
Berths sometimes change.
Publishing an invented shuttle stop five months early would make this guide look comprehensive while actually making it less useful.
So:
Check again close to 23 December.
And follow the instructions provided aboard Anthem of the Seas.
Our separate Fergusson Cruise Terminal Guide will track this specific issue.
Could Anthem of the Seas' Berth Change?
Yes.
Cruise berths are operational arrangements and can change.
The current official listing is:
FERGUSSON.
That is the correct information as of our 14 August 2026 check.
But your final Royal Caribbean documentation and onboard announcements should always take priority close to arrival.
Don't build an Auckland plan around:
“Someone said on Cruise Critic that Anthem normally uses…”
Use the actual current Auckland call.
Is Anthem of the Seas a Tender Call in Auckland?
No.
Royal Caribbean's official itinerary describes Auckland as a docked port call.
That's different from Anthem's previous stop at:
Bay of Islands,
which Royal Caribbean specifically lists as a tendered call from 8am–7pm.
So the New Zealand sequence is:
Bay of Islands
Tender.
Auckland
Dock.
Tauranga
Dock.
That helps when planning each port differently.
About Anthem of the Seas
Anthem of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's Quantum Class ships.
Royal Caribbean currently highlights onboard experiences including:
North Star observation capsule
RipCord by iFLY
SeaPlex
Bumper cars
FlowRider
Extensive entertainment and dining
among the ship's major features.
Royal Caribbean's current deck information lists Anthem at approximately:
168,666 gross tonnes
and:
1,141 feet / around 348 metres long.
In other words:
This is a very large ship.
Which is part of why the exact Auckland berth matters.
North Star
One of Anthem's most recognisable features is the North Star observation capsule.
Royal Caribbean says it rises more than 300 feet above sea level, giving passengers 360-degree views.
That may give you an excellent view of Auckland from the ship.
But:
Auckland is even better from Auckland.
Get ashore.
Royal Caribbean's Own Auckland Suggestions
Royal Caribbean's current Auckland destination material promotes the city around themes including:
Māori culture
Auckland Museum
Harbour experiences
Auckland's volcanic landscape
Central-city sightseeing.
All reasonable suggestions.
But Royal Caribbean passengers should also recognise that Auckland is unusually easy to explore once you're transferred out of Fergusson and into the CBD.
You don't necessarily need to make your entire day a long regional excursion.
What Should Royal Caribbean Passengers Do in Auckland?
If it's your first visit:
See Auckland.
That sounds absurdly obvious.
But cruise passengers often arrive in Auckland and immediately look for:
Hobbiton.
Rotorua.
Waitomo.
Wine country.
All of which can be excellent destinations in the right circumstances.
But Anthem visits:
Tauranga the next day.
Royal Caribbean's official itinerary has the ship docked in Tauranga from 9:00am–8:00pm on 24 December, immediately after Auckland.
That matters because Tauranga is the more natural gateway for many Bay of Plenty and Rotorua-focused experiences.
So on the Auckland day:
Consider actually experiencing Auckland.
Our Favourite First-Time Royal Caribbean Auckland Day
Assuming the final passenger-transfer arrangements provide a sensible downtown arrival:
Morning
Get into central Auckland.
Then
Take the 90-minute Double Decker Discovery.
Afterwards
Choose one major attraction.
Sky Tower
or:
Auckland Museum
or:
Auckland Art Gallery.
Lunch
Viaduct.
Britomart.
Commercial Bay.
Afternoon
Walk the waterfront.
Shop.
Take a short ferry if your schedule comfortably allows.
Then
Return according to Royal Caribbean's Fergusson shuttle/transfer instructions.
Simple.
Varied.
And you have actually seen the city your ship spent the day visiting.
Double Decker Discovery for Royal Caribbean Passengers
Vintage Views operates a roughly 90-minute Auckland sightseeing tour aboard a classic 1960s London Routemaster.
The current published route includes:
Auckland waterfront
Mission Bay
Parnell
Karangahape Road
Ponsonby
Auckland Harbour Bridge
with a central Auckland pickup near Customs Street and Britomart/Waitematā.
That is particularly useful for cruise passengers because the tour gives you:
Range.
You can see parts of Auckland you would never realistically reach during a short downtown walk.
Then you're back in the city.
Yes — We Cross Auckland Harbour Bridge
Royal Caribbean guests often see the Harbour Bridge from the ship.
On the Double Decker Discovery:
We actually cross it.
Vintage Views' current tour page confirms the Harbour Bridge crossing as part of the regular route.
From the upper deck of a vintage Routemaster, it's one of the defining moments of the experience.
And unlike many much longer shore excursions:
You're not committing the entire day.
Is the Vintage Views Bus Open Top?
No.
Dorothy is an enclosed classic London Routemaster.
Vintage Views currently promotes the tour as a covered experience suitable for Auckland's changeable weather.
That's rather helpful when your Auckland date was selected by Royal Caribbean months ago and you don't get to reschedule it because rain exists.
Is the Tour Hop-On Hop-Off?
No.
One continuous sightseeing circuit.
About 90 minutes.
We sometimes describe the philosophy as:
Hop-on hop-off sightseeing — without the off.
You don't spend your port day:
Waiting.
Reboarding.
Checking schedules.
Wondering whether the next bus is coming.
You do the Auckland overview first.
Then explore independently.
How Do Anthem Passengers Reach Vintage Views From Fergusson?
This is the one part we will not pretend is final yet.
Our scheduled city tour departs from central Auckland.
Anthem is currently scheduled at Fergusson.
The exact route from:
ship → authorised cruise transfer → downtown drop-off
needs to follow Royal Caribbean's final passenger arrangement for 23 December.
Once you are in the downtown precinct, our departure point is close to:
Queen Street
Customs Street
Waitematā/Britomart area
Downtown Auckland.
Before booking a departure time, make sure the final Royal Caribbean transfer timetable gives you suitable margin.
Don't Book Based on the 5:30am Port Time
Worth repeating.
Royal Caribbean says:
7:00am docked.
Ports of Auckland says:
5:30am pilot boarding.
Royal passengers should plan around the guest-facing ship schedule and actual clearance, not assume they're standing in central Auckland at 5:45am.
On the morning itself:
Follow Royal Caribbean.
What Can I Do With Anthem's Auckland Port Day?
Royal Caribbean currently schedules Anthem in Auckland from 7am–7pm.
That is a substantial call.
But remember:
You need to subtract:
Disembarkation
Fergusson transfer
Return transfer
All-aboard margin
from the theoretical 12 hours.
You still have plenty of time.
Just not 12 completely free hours.
Option 1 — Auckland City Highlights
This is our favourite for first-time visitors.
90-minute Double Decker Discovery
Then:
Sky Tower
Then:
Viaduct lunch
Then:
Waterfront + shopping.
Low stress.
Very Auckland.
Option 2 — Auckland Museum & City
If culture and history are more important:
Sightseeing tour
for city context.
Then:
Auckland War Memorial Museum.
Royal Caribbean itself highlights Auckland Museum and Māori cultural heritage in its destination material.
This is a particularly good choice for international visitors wanting more context around Aotearoa New Zealand.
Option 3 — Harbour Auckland
Once downtown:
Viaduct Harbour
Ferry
Devonport
Waterfront.
This works particularly well if you've spent several days aboard a giant ship and somehow still haven't had enough harbour.
The key?
Allow plenty of time for the Fergusson return transfer.
Option 4 — Family Auckland
Anthem of the Seas is a highly family-oriented ship, with Royal Caribbean promoting attractions such as bumper cars, SeaPlex, FlowRider and iFLY.
Auckland can continue the family theme without requiring an enormous excursion.
Consider:
Double Decker Discovery
Sky Tower
Wētā Workshop Unleashed
All Blacks Experience
SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's
Ferry to Devonport
Pick two.
Not six.
Royal Caribbean Auckland With Children
Our preferred formula:
Tour first.
Children get:
Red double-decker bus.
Harbour Bridge.
Beaches.
City views.
90-minute duration.
Then choose an attraction that matches their age.
For younger children:
Marine life or ferry.
For older children/teens:
Sky Tower, Wētā or All Blacks Experience.
And somewhere in there:
Feed them.
This remains one of tourism's most underappreciated operational requirements.
Royal Caribbean Auckland for Older Travellers
Auckland can be extremely easy if you plan it intelligently.
You do not need to:
Walk 20 kilometres.
Join a nine-hour excursion.
Climb a volcano.
Or spend your entire day sitting on a modern coach.
A relaxed Royal Caribbean day could be:
Downtown transfer
90-minute sightseeing tour
Waterfront lunch
Sky Tower by taxi
Return transfer.
The biggest planning question for Anthem passengers is not the city itself.
It is simply making sure you understand the Fergusson transfer arrangement.
Limited Mobility
Again:
Fergusson makes this slightly different from a Queens Wharf call.
Passengers with significant mobility requirements should pay close attention to Royal Caribbean's ship-to-shore transfer information and accessible transport arrangements for the port. Royal Caribbean maintains accessibility information for guests as part of its cruise planning resources.
For Vintage Views specifically:
Dorothy is a genuine vintage double-decker.
That means:
Steps.
And an internal staircase to the upper deck.
If mobility is a major concern, contact Vintage Views before booking so suitability can be discussed realistically.
Auckland When It Rains
23 December is summer in Auckland.
That does not constitute a legally binding promise of sunshine.
If it rains:
Double Decker Discovery
Covered.
Commercial Bay
Shopping and dining.
Auckland Art Gallery
Indoor cultural option.
Sky Tower
Mostly indoor.
Wētā Workshop Unleashed
Indoor.
All Blacks Experience
Indoor.
Maritime Museum
Indoor.
Auckland weather can change quickly.
Build an itinerary that doesn't collapse if one cloud appears.
Christmas Timing Matters
Anthem visits Auckland on:
23 December.
Then Tauranga on:
Christmas Eve.
That means Auckland will be in the final days of Christmas trading.
Expect:
Busy retail areas
Busy restaurants
Holiday traffic
Christmas shoppers
Large numbers of cruise passengers
This is a day we'd strongly recommend pre-booking anything you genuinely care about.
That includes tours.
Should I Pre-Book My Auckland Tour?
Yes.
Anthem is a large Quantum-class ship and its Auckland call falls immediately before Christmas. Royal Caribbean's Quantum-class specifications put ships in this family at more than 4,000 guests at double occupancy, while Vintage Views' own 2026/27 cruise-season material identifies Anthem as one of the season's larger single-ship Auckland calls.
Dorothy does not hold 4,000 people.
This presents a mathematical problem.
If you specifically want the vintage double-decker:
Book ahead.
Should I Book a Royal Caribbean Shore Excursion or Independently?
Neither is universally right.
Book through Royal Caribbean if:
You prefer ship-organised logistics.
You're taking a longer regional trip.
You're uncomfortable managing independent return timing.
You want a specific ship excursion.
Explore independently if:
You want Auckland itself.
You like local operators.
You want flexibility.
You want a shorter activity.
You're happy managing your schedule responsibly.
The Fergusson berth means independent travellers simply need to pay extra attention to the final shuttle/transfer arrangements.
Once downtown?
Auckland is very manageable.
Will Anthem Wait if I'm Late?
Do not build an independent day around the assumption that it will.
Royal Caribbean provides the ship's all-aboard instructions.
Follow them.
The published 7:00pm time is the scheduled port departure, not a target for you to arrive back at Fergusson at 6:59pm.
You need to account for:
Downtown → Royal Caribbean transfer point → Fergusson → ship.
The return system for this call matters.
Use it.
What Time Should I Head Back?
We can't sensibly give you one fixed time five months before the call because Royal Caribbean hasn't yet published all the passenger-transfer details we'd want to see.
The correct rule is:
Work backwards from Royal Caribbean's all-aboard and final shuttle arrangements.
If the final shuttle from downtown leaves substantially earlier than the ship's sailing time:
That shuttle time becomes your real deadline.
We'll update this page when the December operational information becomes available.
Can I Walk From Downtown Auckland Back to Anthem?
Do not assume so.
This is a Fergusson call.
Unlike Queens or Princes Wharf, passengers should not treat an active container-terminal environment as a normal pedestrian route.
Follow Royal Caribbean's approved return process.
This is probably the single most important practical difference on this page.
Is Sky Tower Worth It?
For a first Auckland visit?
Yes.
Particularly because Anthem's call is long enough to combine a city tour and one major attraction.
Our favourite sequence is:
Morning
Double Decker Discovery.
Then
Sky Tower.
By the time you reach the observation deck, you'll recognise:
Harbour Bridge
Downtown Auckland
Neighbourhoods
Waterfront
from the tour.
Street level first.
Skyline second.
Should Royal Caribbean Passengers Go to Hobbiton From Auckland?
You can find regional excursions from Auckland.
But we would think carefully.
Anthem's next stop is Tauranga, with a long scheduled call from 9am–8pm.
For many passengers interested in the central North Island, Tauranga may present more logical regional touring opportunities.
So before committing your Auckland day to several hours of regional driving:
Look at the whole New Zealand itinerary.
Not just one port in isolation.
That is smarter cruise planning.
What About Rotorua?
Same principle.
Anthem is scheduled in Tauranga on Christmas Eve immediately after Auckland.
If Rotorua is one of the must-see destinations of your cruise:
Compare the Royal Caribbean excursion options from each relevant port.
Don't automatically assume:
Auckland = leave Auckland.
What About Waiheke Island?
This is more naturally an Auckland experience.
If your Fergusson transfer gets you downtown early and the return arrangements allow enough margin, Waiheke can be possible on a long port day.
But it adds:
Ferry timetable
Island transport
Return ferry
Fergusson transfer
to the schedule.
For a first-time Auckland visitor?
We'd generally keep it simpler.
City + harbour + one main attraction.
What About Devonport?
Much easier.
Once downtown, Devonport is a short ferry trip across the harbour.
This can work nicely with:
Morning sightseeing
Lunch
Devonport
Return downtown
then:
Royal Caribbean transfer back to Fergusson.
Still:
Watch the final return shuttle.
What Currency Does Auckland Use?
Royal Caribbean's New Zealand itinerary information identifies the local currency as:
New Zealand dollars — NZD.
Cards and contactless payment are widespread around Auckland.
For one port day, most visitors do not need to carry large amounts of cash.
Is Auckland Safe to Explore Independently?
Central Auckland is a normal major city environment.
Use ordinary travel awareness:
Secure valuables
Watch traffic
Keep track of time
Follow port security instructions
Don't wander through restricted port areas
The special issue for Anthem passengers is again:
Fergusson.
The port access arrangements should be treated seriously.
Once transferred into normal central Auckland, independent exploring is straightforward.
Is Royal Caribbean Cruising From Auckland?
Royal Caribbean maintains an Auckland departure/destination presence on its website for 2026/27 travel planning.
However, for this guide we are deliberately focusing on the currently verified Auckland port call on the live Ports of Auckland schedule rather than assuming every generic Royal Caribbean Auckland sales page represents a specific homeport departure this season.
As checked:
Anthem of the Seas — 23 December 2026 — Fergusson.
That's the live Auckland Royal Caribbean call we can verify today.
If additional Royal Caribbean calls or Auckland departures are added:
We'll update the page.
Exact Anthem of the Seas Auckland Guide
As the season gets closer, this network should also contain a dedicated exact-date page:
Anthem of the Seas — Auckland — 23 December 2026
That page should be refreshed just before arrival with:
Confirmed berth
Shuttle instructions
Weather
Downtown transfer point
Same-day events
Attraction opening hours
Vintage Views departures
Traffic issues
All relevant Christmas-week information
That's where exact-date cruise SEO becomes particularly powerful.
The cruise-line page stays evergreen.
The ship/date page becomes live operational guidance.

Do not assume normal pedestrian access.
Fergusson is a working port environment. Follow Royal Caribbean's ship-specific passenger-transfer arrangements.

Why Vintage Views Is Building a Royal Caribbean Guide
Because Royal Caribbean passengers have a slightly different Auckland problem this season.
Most of our generic cruise advice says:
“Auckland is easy — walk off Queens or Princes Wharf and you're downtown.”
For Anthem of the Seas on 23 December:
That isn't the whole story.
The ship is currently at:
Fergusson.
That difference matters.
If we want to be a genuinely useful Auckland cruise resource, we need to tell passengers about the awkward details as well as the easy ones.
So this page will evolve.
When shuttle information is confirmed:
We'll add it.
If the berth changes:
We'll change it.
If Christmas-week operations affect the visit:
We'll update that too.
Because the useful answer is not:
“Royal Caribbean visits Auckland.”
The useful answer is:
“Your Royal Caribbean ship visits Auckland on this date, at this berth, and here's what that means for your day.”
