Just outside Matakana Village, Sculptureum combines hundreds of artworks, sculpture-filled gardens, indoor galleries, animals, food and a wonderfully unpredictable collection of things you probably weren't expecting to find in the New Zealand countryside.
Some pieces are beautiful.
Some are strange.
Some are funny.
Some are internationally significant.
And some will make you stop and wonder exactly what you are looking at.

Sculptureum currently describes the experience as containing more than 800 artworks, spread through indoor and outdoor spaces along approximately 1.4 kilometres of art-filled pathways. Most visitors should allow around 2–3 hours for a full visit.
For us, it is one of the genuine highlights of the Matakana Coast — and one of the reasons Matakana deserves to be considered much more than simply a wine region.

What Is Sculptureum?
Sculptureum is difficult to describe in one sentence.
It isn't simply a sculpture park.
It isn't simply an art gallery.
And it certainly isn't a traditional museum.
The experience moves between landscaped outdoor gardens and indoor art spaces, with artworks appearing everywhere from formal gallery walls to unexpected corners of the grounds.
The collection spans wildly different styles and periods.
You might find glass art in one room, pop culture in another, contemporary sculpture outdoors and something wonderfully eccentric just around the next corner.

That means comfortable shoes are a good idea.
It also means you shouldn't plan Sculptureum as a 30-minute photographic stop.
Give it time.
Some of the enjoyment comes from not knowing what is around the next corner.

When Auckland weather decides not to cooperate, Sculptureum has another major advantage:
a substantial part of the attraction is indoors.
The indoor spaces contain a broad and deliberately eclectic collection.

there is considerably more here than one room of paintings.
Is Sculptureum Only for Art Lovers?
No.
That's one of its biggest strengths.
Someone who regularly visits galleries may appreciate individual artists, materials and techniques.
Someone who never goes to galleries may simply enjoy the spectacle.

Good if you're combining Sculptureum with several other Matakana attractions.
Three hours
Better if you enjoy art, gardens and photography or want to stop for food.
Half a day
Very easy if you're adding a leisurely lunch at Rothko.
The old version of this Vintage Views guide suggested allowing three to four hours as a minimum.
We think that's unnecessarily restrictive.
Two to three hours is a much more useful planning guide for most visitors.

Can You Eat at Sculptureum?
Yes.
And if you have the time, combining the art with food makes Sculptureum much more of a complete Matakana experience.
Rothko
Sculptureum's principal on-site dining experience is Rothko Restaurant.
The venue allows visitors to turn a two-hour gallery visit into a longer lunch-and-art experience, and Sculptureum itself recommends incorporating Rothko when making a day of the attraction.
Restaurant operating days and hours can differ from the main Sculptureum opening hours, so check current availability before planning your day around lunch.
Vintage Views tip
If you're eating at Rothko as well as exploring the entire property, don't squeeze Sculptureum between two tightly timed winery bookings.
Give yourself the afternoon.
Sculptureum With Children
Yes — Sculptureum can be very good with children.
This isn't the stereotypical gallery experience where everyone is expected to whisper while staring at paintings in white rooms.
There are outdoor spaces.
There are animals.
There are colourful sculptures.
There are strange things to discover.
And there is room to move.
Sculptureum actively positions the attraction as suitable for families and describes interactive and playful areas as part of the experience.
That doesn't mean children can climb over every artwork, of course.
Normal supervision still applies.

Is Sculptureum Good on a Rainy Day?
Yes — with one qualification.
Sculptureum is both indoor and outdoor, so wet weather doesn't eliminate the experience.
The galleries provide substantial indoor content, but the sculpture gardens remain an important part of the attraction.
On a light-showers sort of Auckland day?
Absolutely.
Take a jacket.
On a torrential storm day?
You'll still have the galleries, but you won't get the best version of the full property.
