The opportunity

Auckland has no shortage of things to see. The challenge for visitors is experiencing enough of the city to understand it.

The city is spread across two harbours, volcanic landscapes, historic suburbs, waterfront precincts and coastal communities. Many visitors see only the CBD, while others spend much of their limited time moving between disconnected attractions.

Vintage Views saw an opportunity to create an Auckland sightseeing experience that was an attraction in its own right.

The answer was Double Decker Discovery: a compact, hosted journey through Auckland aboard Dorothy, our genuine 1960s London Routemaster.

Designing the experience

We did not want to create another conventional city transfer or a recorded-commentary bus loop. The goal was to combine the best parts of a guided tour, a heritage attraction and a scenic drive.

The 90-minute route was designed to show Auckland’s contrasts without requiring guests to repeatedly disembark and wait for another vehicle.

From the central city, Dorothy travels through the waterfront and towards Mission Bay before returning through Parnell, crossing Grafton Bridge, travelling along Karangahape Road and through Ponsonby, and then crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Passengers see the city’s historic, coastal, commercial and cultural faces within a single experience.

A live guide connects those places through stories, observations and local context. This means the tour can respond to the people aboard, the conditions outside and what is happening in Auckland that day.

Why the vehicle changes everything

Dorothy is not simply the transport used to deliver the tour. She is central to the experience.

Before the journey begins, people stop to photograph her. Aucklanders wave as she passes. Visitors recognise the iconic shape and red livery of a London Routemaster, even if they have never travelled aboard one before.

That public reaction creates energy inside the bus. Guests do not feel as though they are merely observing Auckland—they feel like they are part of something occurring within it.

The elevated upper deck also provides a completely different perspective. Passengers can see over traffic, hedges and roadside obstructions, creating clearer views of neighbourhoods, architecture, coastlines and the harbour.

Solving the visitor’s time problem

Many Auckland visitors have limited time. Cruise passengers may have only one day in port. Business travellers may have a free morning. Families may want a memorable activity without committing an entire day.

Double Decker Discovery gives these travellers a concise introduction to Auckland without reducing the city to a rushed checklist.

There are no complicated changes of vehicle, no need to navigate unfamiliar public transport and no repeated waiting at stops. Guests board once, settle in and experience the city as a connected story.

We sometimes describe it as “hop-on, hop-off—without the off.”

The outcome

Double Decker Discovery has become the cornerstone of Vintage Views and its largest tourism product.

Its strength comes from the way several elements work together:

  • A recognisable heritage vehicle

  • A carefully constructed Auckland route

  • Live local hosting

  • Elevated city and harbour views

  • A manageable 90-minute duration

  • A central departure point

  • A product that appeals to visitors and Aucklanders alike

The experience demonstrates that a successful city tour does not need to compete only on distance travelled or the number of stops included. Value can come from originality, atmosphere, interpretation and emotional connection.

Establishing a new Auckland standard

Auckland’s best tourism experiences should feel unmistakably connected to the city while also offering something guests cannot easily recreate independently.

A visitor can drive to Mission Bay. They can walk through Ponsonby. They can cross the Harbour Bridge in a car.

But seeing all of these places from the upper deck of an authentic London Routemaster, with a local host bringing the city to life, is a different proposition entirely.

Double Decker Discovery transforms sightseeing into an occasion—and that is what makes it a genuine Auckland must-do.
